I’m always trying to stay one step ahead of my tiny builder, providing him with toys that keep his hands and mind busy. He already plays with a lot of plastic building sets so I’m constantly on the lookout for a way to make building more educational. We recently found Dream Blocks, which are a unique kind of building block for children ages 2-5. Dream Blocks are made of wood with colorfully painted pictures, but they still have plastic connectors, creating a building block that still snaps together easily and works with other popular building sets while providing the tactile feel of wood.
From the creator of Dream Blocks:
“Welcome to Dream Blocks- where the world of classic wooden blocks combines with leading brand connector blocks to take children to a whole new level of play! Creative, engaging, and educational printed artwork, with no decals, insures a guaranteed level of quality to provide generations of lasting play.”
The Dream Blocks immediately caught the attention of The Bean. We opened the Farm set first and he was quickly building a farm scene, identifying animals and, with our help, practicing animal sounds and identifying letters. The ABC set followed and I really enjoyed this one because it allowed me to sit with him and teach him letters and words while engaging in fun imaginative play. We made up a game where we would pick a letter and then try to build something that began with it.
Since The Bean is really into dinosaurs he loved the Dino themed set and quickly incorporated those blocks into the Pet set (we decided to wait a few years before we break the whole extinction news to him). The Pets Set is really adorable and features animals kids will easily recognize.
Not one to underestimate a toddler boys’ love of pink, we opened the fairy set next, and sure enough it was a hit, with blocks painted to depict adorable fairies and whimsical animals! Our favorite, however, was the Animal Train Set! This set allows children to build two train cars and one engine. The Bean had fun pulling the elephant and giraffe around, as well as building his own train creations!
Dream Blocks are the only building block to combine two different materials to make a child’s toy with numerous benefits:
- The plastic connectors allow them to fit together easily while still allowing for a tactile feel from the wooden block.
- The painted wood blocks are colorful and eye catching.
- The blocks are educational, teaching children letters and words.
There are six different Dream Blocks sets – ABC’s, Animal Train, Dinosaurs, Fairy, Farm and Pets.
The blocks are sturdy and feel good in your hands. Unlike all plastic blocks they have a nice weight and texture to them that’s perfect for little hands to explore. As we build we learn to recognize letters, numbers and colors too!
Of course, no review would be complete with a demonstration from our resident building block expert:
Dream Blocks will definitely be making it into the hands of our nieces and nephews this Christmas! Dream Blocks are available at retailers nationwide, and can be purchased directly from the Dream Blocks HERE.
