Elementary school is tough these days. Jayson has been struggling with math, and I don’t totally blame him. The work is difficult and they move through units at a quick pace, not leaving much time for a struggling student to catch up. Our life feels a little consumed by practice tests and unit reviews lately, so when a friend offered us some tickets to Monster Jam it seemed like a great way to get out with the boys and unwind a little.
I’d never been to Monster Jam before, so i wasn’t really sure of what to expect, but it’s always safe to assume the kids will have fun when monster trucks are involved. We definitely were not disappointed. The trucks were huge and the action started right away. First they were crushing cars, then competing a donut competition. From the start the kids were up put of their seats cheering. We were a little nervous about the noise, which was definitely loud at times, but we didn’t make a big deal about it and even our noise sensitive four year old sat through the entire show without complaint. As a matter of fact, it was probably the most relaxed the boys have been since our temporary moving situation, so maybe it was a much needed break for all of us.
At intermission we were treated to BMX and Motocross stunts and soon after the trucks were back out with even bigger jumps and wild wheelies. I thought we might have to leave early because the boys would be tired but they were screaming and waving their Mohawk Warrior hats in the air as the trucks flew over stacks of cars and spun donuts on the arena floor – the last three trucks flipped over, blew out a tire and got stuck on top of a car heap, only adding to the crazy excitement of the night.
The car ride home was full of chatter about their favorite trucks. Having them both excited about the same thing is actually pretty exciting because that never happens. Of course they wanted to know when they could go again, so I guess I’ll be signing up for the Monster Jam mailing list and keeping an eye out for dates near us. Also, turns out the husband has always wanted to see a Monster Truck show, so I learned something new about him too!
Have you ever attended an event you weren’t sure about, and wound up being surprised at how much fun it was?
