Do you ever think about how simple toys were growing up? No touch screens or fancy gadgets, it sometimes feels like we were easily entertained back then. And as I sit and watch my kids glued to their tablets, or YouTube or Minecraft I sometimes wish I could slow them down a little, and teach them to appreciate something simpler. And that is pretty much what Fisher Price is doing! By reintroducing popular classic toys they are allowing parents to show their kids the joy of a simple toy again. The Fisher Price Movie Viewer is just that – a replica of the original toy introduced in 1973 – the movie viewer is designed to allow children to play black a movie by turning a small hand crank.
I was excited to review this because I adore toys like this. The Fisher Price Movie Viewer works just like the original. Insert a cartridge, turn the crank and watch a movie play before your eyes! Kids can play the movie fast, slow, forwards or backwards as often as they like, no charging required.
The movie viewer comes with two cartridges: Numbers and Letters. It is made of plastic and designed to be easy for small hands.
Opening it up, I intended to let the Bean have a go at it first, figuring the older boys might not be as interested. Everyone got a turn, and I can’t help but laugh over how amazed the boys were – they never for a second ask how they can download games and watch movies anywhere they want – but suddenly they had dozen of questions: How does it work, what does the film look like, can we watch backwards, what do the gears look like and so on.
Money took a turn and loved it. He is learning to identify letters now, so he turned the crank slowly and called out each letter, then rewound it and cranked it quickly while singing the Alphabet Song.
We gave Bean the numbers cartridge because he recognizes them most easily. He quickly figured out how to view his favorite numbers, then rewind and see them over and over again.
I loved watching them have so much fun – soon they were pretending to make their own movies and you know how I love toys that inspire imagination! And one of the best things? No one asked me to plus anything in, or get them some batteries, or enter my password anywhere! It worked right of the box, and I love that they kept the classic look because it has a very vintage feel.
The Fisher Price Movie Viewer is topping our toy list – and a few toddlers in our lives will be receiving them for Christmas as well. Because of the simplicity and tried and true fun, I think it’s the perfect toy for anyone who needs a break from the gadgets this year!
