School’s out and summer is in full swing now, which means a house full of kids who don’t want to waste a second of their sweet, sweet summer freedom. This week was our first week of summer break, and unfortunately I found myself swamped in work, with errands just piling up around me. I always feel bad when the kids get stuck home all day because I’m racing a deadline or trying to catch up on laundry and I just couldn’t find the time for a full on day trip. Tuesday afternoon I snuck away from my computer for a few hours and lounged out in the sun with the kids, watching them go back and forth between riding their bikes and swimming. As the day wound down I realized it was dinnertime, and I wasn’t quite ready to give up the fun we’d been having, so I quickly piled the kids into the car for a last-minute McDonald’s trip.
McDonald’s is my go to for an easy summer treat. As my kids get older they may trade in their Happy Meals for McDoubles, but they never outgrow the excitement of pulling into the McDonald’s parking lot. I love thinking back to the silly memories we’ve had over the years – BBQ sauce mustaches and laughter as they try to scoop every last bit of hot fudge out of their sundaes, or the happiness of digging a great new toy out of their happy meal box and making new friends on the play place – which is exactly what we did this week.
At the end of the day it’s not just a treat for the kids either, it’s a treat for me – a chance to trade cooking and washing dishes for extra time with my family. And it doesn’t hurt that McDonald’s has completely upgraded their Premium Salads either. Now, when we do have McDonald’s I can count on having a delicious, healthy dinner!
Gone are the days of bland lettuce – McDonald’s Premium Salads are packed with fresh romaine, baby spinach, baby kale, Tuscan red leaf lettuce and ribbon-cut carrot curls and topped with 100% chicken breast seasoned with a blend of spices including black pepper, garlic and onion powder and parsley. Mcdonald’s also offers Newman’s Own dressings and each salad boasts a full 2.5 cups of veggies! The Premium Salads are no menu afterthoughts and it feels great to know I can get a real salad, full of fresh, healthy veggies! These salads are the real deal too. You’re not walking out still hungry, resisting the temptation of leftover fries. They’re really good, and really filling. Which is so awesome, because when I go out to eat I want to enjoy the food – even if I’m trying to be health conscious. Even with the dressing this salad is under 500 calories – which makes it a great lunch or dinner option without feeling like I went off the deep end.
My personal favorite is the Bacon Ranch Grilled Chicken Salad. This salad is full of fresh, crisp chopped romaine, baby kale, baby spinach, red leaf lettuce, ribbon cut carrots and grape tomatoes topped with jack and cheddar cheeses, thick-cut applewood smoked bacon and a perfectly seasoned and grilled chicken breast. Every time I order it the lettuce and veggies are fresh and crunchy, the chicken is perfectly cooked and my healthy dinner feels like a splurge thanks to the thick-cut Applewood smoked bacon and Newman’s Own Buttermilk Ranch dressing. Even my nine year old begs to swap some of his fries for a few bites of my salad! Of course you can also get this with crispy chicken if that’s you’re thing – but I’ve become a huge fan of how flavorful and juicy McDonald’s grilled chicken is.
Then there’s the Southwest Salad, which features the same super-fresh veggies layered with roasted corn and tomatoes, black beans, poblano peppers, jack and cheddar cheeses, chili-lime tortilla strips and cilantro. Topped off with a grilled or crispy chicken breast, a wedge of lime and Newman’s Own Southwest dressing this salad is another amazing pick, especially for the summer!
These premium salads really change the way you think about fast food salads. I love that McDonald’s has worked so hard to update their menus, ensuring that moms and dads have modern, healthy and great tasting choices. Healthier options aren’t limited to just salads either. Over the last two years McDonald’s has made changes to over half the items on their national menu, focusing on offering healthier, wholesome choices for the whole family. Everything from sourcing cage free eggs and hormone free milk to preparing their burgers and chicken with a perfect blend of spices and all new signature crafted sauces is aimed at making McDonald’s a favorite treat for the entire family.
