When I found a little brown box outside our door the other day I knew we were in for a big surprise. Safari Ltd has just released their new 2016 collection and we were lucky enough to be previewing one of their not yet released pieces! Inside that little brown box was… the brand new Safari Ltd 2016 Grumpy Dragon figure!
Fantasy fans rejoice – Safari Ltd is has taken their fantastic dragon figures to a whole new level. While the 2016 collection has the same stunning detail and styling we always expect from Safari Ltd, these dragons have just a little more whimsy and magic to them. Each dragon in the 2016 collection portrays a specific trait – from our dear Grumpy Dragon to the exuberant Happy Dragon and the touching mother and daughter duo Love Dragon – these figures take a step away from the typically realistic renditions we’re used to and give each dragon their own touch of character!
These characteristics make play time even more fun for children! With his hands on our new Grumpy Dragon my son went right to work weaving a story around this dragon’s no nonsense scowl. For starters, we discovered that our Grumpy Dragon was pretty unhappy that he’d lost his nice dark cave. Making a new cave sounded like a fun afternoon activity, so we set to work finding materials.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own dragon abode:
A shoe box or other small box
Paper Cups or Yogurt Containers
First we covered the shoe box and yogurt containers in construction paper using glue and a little tape. Once they were dry we glued the yogurt container “rocks” into the box to make the cave nice and comfortable for a Grumpy dragon. We added a plastic tree, but you can always simply draw a tree on the construction paper. Now, if I know anything about dragons it’s that they love their treasure – bad mood or not. I sent the boys off in search of some dragon loot while the cave finished drying and we wound up with an assortment of rocks, coins and chocolate. You’d think a dragon might crack a smile around all those goodies, but sadly that’s just not in the cards for Grumpy Dragon. Before long some daring knights had come across his precious horde, and he’s been busy defending his loot ever since!
While you’re building here are some of these fun dragon facts:
- Dragons are mythological creatures that appear in stories from all different cultures.
- They can often breathe fire or even ice!
- Dragons are popular in Chinese mythology and often revered!
- Dragons appear in many popular books and movies like Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Eragon and How to Train A Dragon.
- Dragons are said to love treasure like gold and precious stones.
- In stories dragons are sometimes mean and destructive, but they can also be kind and helpful. Pete the Dragon was fun imaginary dragon friend, and we’ve seen some friendly dragons portrayed more recently on Sophia the First!
Once the cave is dry you are ready to embark on your very own dragon adventure!
We finished our night reading our favorite dragon books, Dragons Love Tacos!
So it’s clear Grumpy Dragon has the boys’ stamp of approval. What about me? I think this 2016 Safari Ltd Dragon has the same attention to detail and superior craftsmanship we’ve come to expect from Safari Ltd toys. I love the ever so slightly more whimsical approach to these mythical creatures. Dragons already open a world of possibility in a child’s mind, and these animated characters only add to the excitement of imaginative play. Want to see the rest of the new 2016 collection?
