Last weekend we finally went to pick out our Jack O Lantern. With the kids being sick back to back we never got around to pumpkin picking, and by last weekend it felt like we were almost out of time. Stew Leonards wound up being our choice, it was a reasonable driving distance and didn’t involve walking through a farm, something that the Bean, recovering from a cold and roseolla, was clearly not up to yet. We were a little disappointed, but determined to get a good pumpkin anyway.
Pumpkin picking is hard work when you need the perfect pumpkin and you need three boys to agree on exactly what the perfect pumpkin is. My monkey loves little pumpkins, while his big brother wanted one that “weighed at least 50 lbs” (who was going to carry that home!?). The Bean, like me, just wants all the pumpkins.
After a while of searching we finally found one to agree on. Not quite 50 lbs, and not quite tiny, but perfect for our Jack O Lantern plans! I love watching the kids sort through giant pumpkins, especially when they’re so young the pumpkins easily outweigh them!
And then we celebrated, because finding the perfect pumpkin is always reason to celebrate. My monkey has some killer moves going on, I think he was doing a zombie robot dance here.
And the Bean just continues to look adorable as he quietly grabs pumpkins from passing bins.
His collection is getting impressive. At this point none of us have realized just how many pumpkins he’s gathered.
Although I’m pretty sure this is when we told him to put them back..
That’s how I look too when I can’t get ALL the pumpkins I want. I cut him some slack, it’s only so often you can be buried in a pumpkin pile. He mostly walks around the house with them until I cook them.
At this point we have filled a shopping cart completely, so we decide to head home and get to carving. Overall our picking was a success, even though we had to skip the traditional farm visit this year. We got plenty of sugar pumpkins to roast too, so expect more pumpkin recipes soon. It’s not like you can ever have too many!
In fact, you should head down to the comments right now and share your favorite pumpkin recipe with me, I need something new to try!
