As summer draws to a close and swimsuits are being swapped for backpacks there’s an obvious excitement in the air – a new school year brings new opportunities, experiences and chances to connect with friends old and new. For parents this can be a stressful time as well though. From the time our children are small the new school year brings new worries. Will our preschoolers cry all day long? Will our kindergartner make friends? Will our third graders be ready for the pressure of state exams? Will our seventh graders handle peer pressure with a cool head? As our children grow the things we worried about in the past begin to feel trivial, or maybe we begin to feel more confident that we’ve raised them to make the right choices.
My boys are still young enough to need an adult present to be let off the school bus, but with college age cousins and nieces the growing concern for the safety of people we love is always there. Recent news reports don’t do much to ease those fears either. When I first learned of the Rayovac Power Protect I instantly the thought of the young women in my family starting out on their own.
The Rayovac Power Protect is a small personal safety device that packs a pretty big punch. For everyday use the Power Protect acts as a portable charger, ready to charge your cellphone on the go so you’re never out of contact. The small LED light also makes easy work of finding and using keys in the dark. The real value in the Power Protect is not as obvious however. One hard tug on the ring at the end of the device will set of a piercing 100 dBM panic alarm that can be heard up to 220 yards away (that’s the equivalent of two foot ball fields!) and activating a strobe light on the device immediately drawing attention to you and any surrounding danger. And the Power Protect has a 20% battery reserve for the siren, so even if it’s been charging a phone all day it will still be able to sound that alarm when needed.
There are a few things that make the Power Protect really stand out to me. The first is that the device itself is not bulky or inconvenient to carry. It can easily be kept in a purse or on a keyring and looks like a small flashlight. The portable charger also makes it really desirable to have with you – what high school or college age student couldn’t use a little extra battery on the bus ride home? I carried it with me for a few weeks, and although I’m typically forgetful after the first couple of days I found myself purposefully checking for the Power Protect along with my wallet and keys before leaving home, because I had come to depend on it as a phone charger while out.
I was happy to find that even when kept in my purse I never accidentally set of the Power Protect. To activate the siren and strobe light you have to give a good tug to the ring at the end. The loop is nice and large, so you can easily find it in an emergency, and then grasping the device in one hand and tugging the ring with the other will active the panic alarm. I was really happy with the quality and thought put into this as the device is simple to activate on purpose, but not simple enough to be set off in a purse or backpack. The siren is LOUD and will definitely draw attention to your location. The strobe light is a great touch as well – when we tested the Power Protect we found that in the dark the strobe light really helped us to pinpoint what direction the sound was coming from.
The Rayovac Power Protect is easy to charge as well. Just plug the included micro USB charger into any computer or USB outlet. The device features a UL certified lithium battery and LED indicator lights to allow you to know when it’s fully charged. Once charged the Rayovac Power Connect can hold it’s charge for up to six months.
After testing I was sold. The Power Protect definitely made the top of my back to school list and I plan to purchase a few to send not only to my nieces away at college, but also for my sister and mom, and who often return home after dark and have to walk from their cars to their homes alone. As for me, I’ll be hanging on to my Rayovac Power Protect as I’ve gotten pretty used to the feeling of added security knowing I can quickly draw attention to myself when I’m walking to my car in dark parking lots, on my way home from the gym at night or traveling home from the city by train.
The Rayovac Power Connect is available exclusively on Amazon for $24.99. You can find our more about the Rayovac Power Protect by visiting Rayovac.com, or by following Rayovac on Facebook and Twitter!
