I have been really juggling the idea of Sands Alive! review for a while. I’m not a big fan of messy things, which is rough because I have a three year old who was born to make messes. Last week I was in and out of the garage putting Halloween decorations away as The Bean played with his newly acquired army men. On one of my trips out with a plastic tote full of spider webs and candles I smelled something strange. And then I started to sneeze. As I began to walk around in an attempt to locate the smell I also started to feel something crunching under my feet. And then there was The Bean. Sitting at the end of a trail of black pepper. Also at the end of that trail was a large black pepper mound, covered in army men and tanks. I managed to get out a “what have you done?” in between sneezes and The Bean promptly informed me that his “armies” needed a beach. Unfortunately for those army men Black Pepper Beach was quickly relocated to the garbage pail (although I’m still finding bits of pepper here and there).
And that’s when I decided to give Sands Alive! a try. We got a starter set, which has everything you need to have beach like fun – Sands Alive! sand, a tray to keep it in and an assortment of molds, tools and rollers. The Bean dug right in, making shapes and squishing the sand between his fingers. The sand entertained him for almost an hour! He used all of the included tools, but enjoyed his hands the most – and I have to admit, Sands Alive! does feel really cool.
The included tray is nice and deep and should really be able to keep all of the sand in one place, but The Bean has a talent for messes and before long the sand was on the table, chair and floor as well. I was pretty concerned about the clean up, especially from the upholstered chair he was on. As soon as he was ready to clean up for snack time I began my own clean up – only to be surprised at how quickly I finished. The sand wiped up easily from the table and chair and was quickly swept off the floor as well, leaving virtually nothing behind!
I’m actually a little annoyed with myself for not trying Sands Alive! sooner. It kept him busy for so long and was a breeze to clean up? These are the kinds of toys I need in my life! Sands Alive! is made of all natural, organic ingredients and is completely non toxic, plus is doesn’t stain (great news for my chairs). It’s really a great sensory experience, even I found it hard to stop touching the sand!
And of course you can play with it over and over again. This is definitely topping the list for our favorite hands on toys!
