So, it’s December and we’re officially in full holiday mode. This is truly my favorite time of year. There’s just something about Christmas in NYC that is pure magic. Maybe it’s the fantastic lights and window displays, or the streets filled with people bundled from head to toe rushing to and from – the true meaning of hustle and bustle. It might be that everyone seems to be quicker to smile or offer a kind word this time of year, or maybe the smell of chestnuts and snow in the air (although we’ve yet to see any of the latter yet this year). Or, it just may be that NYC is one of the few places where you can escape from the cold into a small theatre to watch a hilarious and boozy rendition of A Christmas Carol. Of course, that’s exactly how we kicked off our Holiday Season, catching a spirited showing of The Imbible: Christmas Carol Cocktails at The Elektra Theatre last week.
The Imbible is an off-broadway musical hit that takes you on a boozy trip through 10,000 years of spirit and cocktail history and The Imbible: Christmas Carol Cocktails puts a Christmas spin on this exciting musical for a very limited time. We arrived in Times Square and quickly found our way into The Elektra Theatre, where we gathered around festively decorated tables. As the play begins we find ourselves peering into the bedchambers of one Ebenezer Scrooge as he wakes from his visit with the Spirits of Christmas. Vowing to keep the true meaning of Christmas Ebenezer delights in finding out that he has not missed Christmas Day, and sets about to plan a party. Unfortunately, he quickly realizes that his lack of Christmas cheer has left him unprepared for such festivities.
So Ebenezer does what any man who’s just spent the night with a bunch of ghostly spirits might do – he calls them back for a little more help. With the aide of these spirits Ebenezer is once again transported through time to learn a lesson – although this lesson is slightly more spirited than the one before. The cast is lively and full of humor as they take us on a boozy and musical trip through history where we will learn about some of the most popular festive drinks throughout the years – and the fun doesn’t stop there! As Ebenezer and us, the captive audience, learn about these cocktails we also have the pleasure of trying them. Each ticket to The Imbible: Christmas Carol Cocktails includes three craft cocktails. We enjoyed the Brandy Syllabub, Jacob Marley’s favorite, and the deliciously toasty Drambuic Mocha (a drink my husband has insisted on adding to our own holiday celebrations this year). And what would a show be without a grand finale, which is exactly what you get before you are served your third drink – the Molecular Candy Cane Martini (which we won’t be making at home due to our lack of science lab).
The cast does a wonderful job of captivating the audience with moving musical numbers, humorous banter and lively interactions. We left The Elektra Theatre that evening substantially more jolly. The Imbible: Christmas Carol Cocktails is a fun twist on a classic story that is a must for anyone looking to experience a unique and memorable holiday show. Whether you’re a native, or just visiting for the holidays, if you’re in NYC this month The Imbible: Christmas Carol Cocktails should definitely be on your list!
The show runs now through January 2nd at 10:30 every Friday night and 7:00pm every Saturday at The Elektra Theatre (300 West 43rd Street At Eighth Avenue). Tickets are $75.00 a person and include three craft cocktails! Ready to buy tickets? Head on over to The Imbible’s website to grab them before they’re sold out!
