I first saw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Half Shell Heroes line at the TTPM Holiday Showcase earlier this year. It only took a short demonstartion and checking out a few of the toys in this line to make me a fan. I have a 7, 4 and 2 year old. My two year old loves everything his brothers like, and that includes their TMNT toys. Unfortunately, their toys are not made for the abuse a two year old dishes out, not to mention all of the tiny accessories we are always hiding from the little one.
The Half Shell Heroes line is designed specifically for preschoolers. The toys are chunkier and easier to hold. They are missing the very small accessory pieces and instead come with kid friendly, durable pieces. When I was asked to review the Half Shell Heroes Shellraiser I couldn’t say yes fast enough. The Half Shell Heroes line is made by Playmates Toys, the same company that makes all of our favorite TMNT toys already, so I was expecting great quality.
The Shellraiser comes with a Leonardo figure, a water cannon, disc shooter and plays 20 different sounds and phrases. The toy has a really sturdy design, with large wheels that roll smoothly and easy access buttons to activate all the features.
My favorite things about this toy: The trash canon does not actually shoot a projectile. The “trash” pops out, and then can be pushed back in to use again. I love this, because my two year old is often frustrated when he can’t find the projectile pieces to toys after using them. He can use the canon over and over without fear of losing anything!
The entire top of the Shellraiser opens, leaving easy access for small hands to reach the figures inside.
The disc shooter on the back can be removed if you’re not a fan, although The Bean loved it and it was easy for him to get the hang of loading and shooting it. The discs have slots to be stored in, if you can get your child to remember to put them back All of the buttons on the Shellraiser are easy to see and large enough to press easily! The barrel bighter at the front is also very easy to operate with a simple push button.
There are plenty of features on this Half Shell Heroes Shellraiser to keep all of the kids entertained, and for one the older kids wanted to play with The Bean’s toy too!
The only mishap we had was that the top door popped off a couple of times when he opened it too far, but that was not a problem for two reasons: it is super easy to pop back on, even the older boys figured out how to do it right away, and I’m pretty sure the door pops off to prevent it from breaking when it’s pushed too far. Also, this toy says ages 3+ and The Bean only just turned 2.
Overall, the toy is designed really well for preschoolers and is a great option for children who have always been too young for the TMNT toy line. The Half Shell Heroes Shellraiser is packed with fun features and is a sturdy toy. The figure that comes with it is also nice and sturdy, the perfect size for small hands. All of the toys in this line have softer features, more appropriate for younger children.
We liked the toy so much we’ve already purchased the Half Shell Heroes Sewer, the 12″ talking Leo and a number of figures for The Bean on Christmas.
If you have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans at home you definitely want to check out everything the Half Shell Heroes line offers this year!
