Living with an engineer and his three minions (and occasionally their electritian and all around tinker-er Grandpa) means there’s always a project or two in various stages of completion around out home and a wish list for future projects that only seems to get longer each month. Of course, I made a bee line for the Vex Robotics table at the Toy Insider’s Holiday of Play. Vex Robotics kits are always at the top of that list and I love checking out what’s new (and getting my hands on all the info I can so my guys – big and small – can pore over it at home)!
My kids already love the Hexbug Vex Robotics Giant Bugs. There are four different RC bugs and you can design and build each one from the ground up before taking it for a spin. Since each bug moves differently the boys have had fun exploring each of those kits.
So I was not surpirsed to arrive at the Vex Robotics booth to find out they had really upped the ante. Waiting and ready for a demonstration was the Vex IQ Robotics Construction Kit. This 750 piece kit allows to build custom, programmable robots – follow the instructions to build your first robot, or get creative and design something entirely your own, then program it with two software options: Modkit for VEX (free online version) or ROBOTC.
The robot is controlled by a video games style controller and with four motors and lots of sensors children can really program and customize the behavior of this robot over and over.
The Vex IQ Robotics Construction Kit includes:
- Robot Brain with 12 self-configuring input/output ports
- 750+ pieces
- Four Smart Motors
- One Color Sensor, one Bumper Switch sensor, one Touch LED sensor, and built in rotational sensors on the motors
- Video game style remote control with a rechargeable lithium ion battery
- Two programming software options – Modkit for VEX (free online version) or ROBOTC
- VEX IQ Curriculum – Free for all users!
My favorite part may be the tool-less components, which allow kids to just snap together all of the pieces. Of course, the quality is just what you’d expect from Hexbug and this is a kit that can be used over and over again!
I know this is one toy that’s topping our list this year and if you’re shopping for a budding builder, scientist or engineer or just want to get your kids started with STEM focused toys, you can’t go wrong with the Vex IQ Robotics Kit. It’s straightforward enough for beginners and customization enough to keep enthusiasts enthralled!
Six AA batteries are required for the robot brain.
