I’ve been waiting to do this WowWee REV Review for a few weeks now because these may be the coolest toys we’ve seen all year. REV stands for Robotic Enhanced Vehicles, and WowWee really pulled out all the stops when it comes to player vs. computer gameplay. REV vehicles are app enabled and ready to battle. Play player vs. player or take advantage of WowWee’s incredible AI mode, where you play against a surprisingly challenging computer. The point is, of course, to out maneuver your opponent while using different weapons to deplete their health and disable their vehicle.
Inside the started kit are two R.E.V. vehicles – one black and red and one white and blue. What makes these vehicles so amazing is what’s packed into them – advanced compact robotics, BeaconSense GPS tracking, independent wheel based propulsion, and a CPU processing at 16 million cycles per second – all to create an AI designed to hunt and destroy you in battle.
So now you know what they are, let’s talk about how they really work. Setting REV up is simple. Unpack the cars and install the batteries (4 AA each, and you’re best off making them rechargables!). Download the REV app on either the iTunes or Google Play Store (we are using the iOS version in this review) and pair the vehicles to your device using your bluetooth connectivity. This is all very straightforward and works exactly as the box says. Time from unboxing to gameplay: under five minutes.
Once installed you use the app to control your vehicle and to select different modes of play. There are game modes: Arena and Campaign. When selecting multiplayer you can play these modes with up to 16 other players or AI Controlled vehicles. In Single player mode you are putted against a number of different A.I. characters, all with different skills, weapons and tactics. Playing against a friend is pretty straightforward: using the app you control your vehicle and battle it out with different weapons. You can choose weapons, maneuver, heal and monitor damage all from the screen of your smartphone or tablet. One of my favorite things is how REV reacts to damage. With simulated damage physics REV cars react to damage in real world terms. The location of the damage causes the car to react differently, swerving in a certain direction or driving erratically. Take enough damage and you’ll find it difficult to maintain your speed. The cars are loaded with great sound effects for just about everything they do and all of the damage they take!
In A.I. mode you will be battling a number of different characters from three groups: drivers, warriors and bosses. Each character has tactics, weapons and strategies unique to that character. Beat all the drivers and you’ll be worthy of challenge the warriors. Take out the warriors and you’ll go head to head with the bosses. We honestly have not made it through all of the characters, because the A.I. is just so good. In the past I’ve found a lot of computer controlled players to be easy to beat or predictable but that is not the case with REV. The BeaconSense GPS is extremely accurate and can detect every REV within 5 meters. The satisfyingly aggressive A.I. constantly adjusts in real time to your position and modifies it’s attack. It’s genuinely hard to out maneuver the A.I.
Another really great thing about REV is that you don’t need any special tracks. You can play on just about any indoor surface and we’ve had success on hardwood floors, tile and carpet. Find yourself a big enough space and gather your friends – up to 16 vehicles can play on teams or in a free for all format. Or, challenge yourself on a whole new level against multiple A.I. controlled vehicles.
Overall, we are very impressed with how well REV works. WowWee has outdone themselves, delivering a truly fun and challenging battle game with an A.I. system far more intelligent than we imagined. The cars are well built and seem to be holding up perfectly and so far we’ve gotten excellent battery life from REV (do however expect some additional drain on your phone’s battery from the bluetooth).
Amazon is currently selling the REV battle pack for $75.00, or you can grab the deluxe version which includes a REV launch ramp and recharge pack for $149.99.
